The city will host its second annual Coldest Night of the Year Walk on Saturday, Feb. 24.
The event is a fundraiser for The Society to End Homelessness in Burnaby and Burnaby Community Services, two non-profits that provide programs for those in need.
Organizers are anticipating more than 250 walkers. Last year, 28 teams signed up (236 walkers in total), and a whopping $43,190 was raised. (The goal was $32,000.)
“Too many of Burnaby’s vulnerable are homeless and at high health risk,” said Karen O’Shannacery, president of The Society to End Homelessness, in a press release. “This fundraiser will enable us to continue offering an average of 120 homeless and at-risk people much needed immediate assistance such as food, clothing and transit, all of which is critical as we work toward long-term solutions such as shelter and housing.”
According to the release, 90 per cent of Burnaby’s homeless have one health condition, while 50 per cent have two or more.
The Coldest Night of the Year Walk will start at Marlborough Elementary School (east gym), at 6060 Marlborough Ave. Registration will open at 4 p.m., followed by opening ceremonies at 5 p.m., and the walk (2, 5 or 10k options) kicking off at 5:15 p.m.
