January is slogging along, as it does, but there is still plenty going on in Burnaby to keep us occupied this winter. From Dine Out Vancouver to the numerous exhibits going on in the city, there is a plethora of indoor activities so residents can stay out of the cold. But keep in mind, getting out in the sun is an option, too.

We're continuing with our popular feature - our staff's Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend. Here's our Top 5 list for Jan. 17 to 19.

1 Get dining with the Dine Out Vancouver Festival. The Burnaby participants are: Broken Rice Vietnamese Restaurant in Burnaby Heights at 4088 Hastings St.; Hart House alongside Deer Lake at 6664 Deer Lake Ave.; Horizons on Burnaby Mountain at 100 Centennial Way; The Keg Steakhouse and Bar at 4510 Still Creek Ave.; Reflect Social Dining and Lounge at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown; Stonegrill at the Met at #259-4820 Kingsway; Tivoli's Restaurant at 4201 Lougheed Hwy; and Riverway Clubhouse at 9001 Bill Fox Way.

The Dine Out Vancouver Festival takes place from Jan. 17 to Feb. 2. Public reservations are now open. Go to www.dineoutvancouver.com for more information on the restaurants, menus and reservation process.

2 Get outside while the weather is sunny, so long as the weekend forecast holds out. Take a walk through the neighbourhood or visit one of the city's many scenic spots, such as the Playground of the Gods atop Burnaby Mountain.

3 Get expanding your mind with The Bells, a video exhibition by Damian Moppett. According to the Simon Fraser University Gallery website, the video engages directly with photographs of Moppett's studio and its contents.

These images are presented to the video camera as stills and are accompanied by a soundtrack of the artist responding to the images.

The opening reception for the exhibit is on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The gallery is in Academic Quadrangle 3004, 8888 University Dr.

For more information, go to www.sfu.ca/galleries/sfu-gallery.html.

4 Get exploring the Volumes: Works in Paper exhibit, which ends Sunday at the Burnaby Art Gallery, 6344 Deer Lake Ave.

The exhibit features works from the permanent collection as well as new works by emerging artists, exploring sculptural and structural works on and in paper.

The gallery is open Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is by donation, with a suggested donation of $5.

For more information, go to www.burnabyartgallery.ca or call 604-297-4422.

5 Get learning at the "long night" tea ceremony workshop at the Nikkei Museum and Cultural Centre on Sunday.

The January tea ceremony workshop will focus on how tea is enjoyed in the depths of winter through the "yobanashi" or "long night" tea gathering. The workshop will take a maximum of 12 students, and it will only be held if there is a minimum of four attending.

Those attending should not wear jeans or miniskirts and should bring a pair of white socks.

The fee is $28 for the general public, $25 for members. Matcha, sweets and tax are included.

The Yobanashi: Mid-Winter Tea workshop is in English and runs from 1 to 4 p.m. The instructor is Maiko Behr.
