Family Ties: Spring fun for the small folks

Want to raise a reader? The Brentwood Community Resource Centre can help. It’s hosting its next Raise-a-Reader family drop-in night on Tuesday, April 18.

A Burnaby Public Library librarian will be on hand for circle time, designed for young children and their families. Kids can learn a new song, have fun with words and language and start getting into the bedtime reading habit.

The drop-in runs from 4 to 7 p.m., with circle time from about 5:45 to 6:15 p.m. Bring a snack or dish to share, and spend as long as you like. The drop-ins happen every Tuesday until May 16.

PLAY TO LEARN

Parents of preschoolers, check it out. Burnaby Public Library is teaming up with YMCA Child Care Resource and Referral, Fraser Health and Burnaby parks, recreation and cultural services to offer a series of Play to Learn open house drop-ins at local schools.

You can meet early childhood education experts, connect with the school community and other families, and enjoy entertainment and fun for kids. All the fun is aimed at parents with kids aged three to five.

The next session is coming up Wednesday, April 19 at Maywood Community School, 4567 Imperial St., from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. There’s also a session on Friday, April 28 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Gilmore Community School, 50 South Gilmore Ave.

CHESS CLUB

Kids can enjoy fun and skill building during Kids’ Chess Club sessions at the Metrotown library branch.

Curtis Lister of the Burnaby Junior Chess club facilitates the chess club sessions on Saturdays at the Bob Prittie branch of Burnaby Public Library (6100 Willingdon Ave.). It’s on every Saturday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. up to May 12.

You don’t need to register, but space is limited, so you’re encouraged to drop in early. Parents of kids under 10 are asked to remain in the room.

GOLF FESTIVAL

Whether you’re the kind of devoted fan who follows professional golf and hits the links at every spare moment, or you’ve always just had an idea that you might take up golf one day, here’s a weekend pastime for your family.

Burnaby Mountain Golf Course is holding its annual golf festival on Saturday, April 22. There will be plenty of fun for folks of all ages, with golf clinics, custom club fitting, demonstrations, prizes and activities for all ages.

DROP-IN FUN

If you’re at home with little people and looking for something to get you out of the house, don’t miss out on Burnaby Family Place’s drop-in playtime.

The playtimes, for parents and kids up to age six, runs Monday to Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 P.M. AT 410 Clare Ave. (one block east of Sperling and Hastings). The coffee’s always on, and parents and kids can make new friends and connections in the community.

FOREST FAIRY GATHERING

Aw, here’s a sweet one for the small fairy-loving beings in your home.

Burnaby Lake Regional Park is hosting a Forest Fairy Gathering on the Victoria Day weekend. Drop by the Nature House (4519 Piper Ave.) on Saturday, May 20 to take part. You can visit the “Gnome Depot” to get construction material for your fairy home, and you can also enjoy free face painting and other fun.

Fairy attire is, of course, welcome.
