A new, outdoor fitness circuit at Burnaby Fraser Foreshore Park will be opening soon.

Burnaby’s three Rotary Clubs, which undertook the task of raising the $150,000 to build it, will hold a grand opening ceremony this Friday.

The fitness circuit includes a one-kilometre loop in the park, with four “pods.” Each pod contains three fitness workstations.

“There’s balancing bars, bars where you can do chin ups; there’s kind of a reclining bicycle; there’s an elliptical trainer,” says Rotarian Peter Beynon. “There’s various other things where you can sit and lift your own weight.”

In the fall of 2013, the clubs met with city officials to discuss possible options for a legacy project that could be built in honour of Canada’s 150th birthday. Ideas tossed around included a water park, a gazebo and a covered picnic area.

“They (the city) said, ‘We will not be able to get those things built by Canada’s 150th.’ They suggested a fitness park,” said Beynon.

Burnaby Fraser Foreshore Park is well-used by joggers and families, so the addition of a fitness circuit is expected to be popular. The grand opening ceremony this Friday is set for 3 p.m. Everyone is invited.
