1. The South Burnaby Garden club is hosting its annual fall fair this weekend. It’s a chance for gardeners to show off their bounty from an unusually hot and dry summer. The fair features local vegetables, plants, flowers, hanging baskets and fruit. There will also be a tea room with baked goods, cut flowers and produce for sale. The fair is at Bonsor Recreation Complex, at 6550 Bonsor Ave. It runs from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free.
2. Get your tickets for alt-J’s fall tour. The British indie rockers are coming to Deer Lake Park on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 5:30 p.m. as part of their fall 2015 tour. The band has put out two albums so far. This is All Yours is their latest, and it’s been nominated for several awards. If you haven’t heard them, check them out on YouTube. Tickets are $60.25, available from www.ticketmaster.ca.
3. Check out the car trunk sale on Saturday, Sept. 12 at Bill Copeland Sports Centre, at 3676 Kensington Ave., from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The sale is a great opportunity to turn your household clutter into cash or peruse other people’s items for sale. Admission is free for buyers, but sellers pay $13.75 per stall. Tables are also available for an additional fee. Info/stall and table rentals: 604-297-4521. If you’re in a treasure-hunting mood, there’s also the Cariboo Road Christian Fellowship Church sale on from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The church is at 7200 Cariboo Rd.
4. Try your hand at knitting and crocheting at the Tommy Douglas library branch. The Knit2gether group meets from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12. All ages and skill levels are welcome, and participants often bring cookies to share. The library branch is at 7311 Kingsway.
5. Help clean up the Kingsway-Imperial area this Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meet at Burlington Square, 5172 Kingsway, and join the Kingsway-Imperial Neighbourhood Association, which is leading the charge to improve area. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m., the cleanup runs from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by a barbecue for participants.
