Students from two Burnaby schools marched on the George Derby Centre last week to honour the many veterans who live there.

Students from Cariboo Hill Secondary and Armstrong Elementary, which are both close by the senior centre, visited on Thursday to plant about 5,000 small Canadian flags all over the grounds.

The flags will stay put until after Remembrance Day, when the students will be back to help clean them up.

The centre started out with 6,000 flags for its annual flag fundraiser this year, and about 5,500 are in the ground, but people can still visit George Derby before the Rembrance Day service there on Nov. 11 and get a flag by donation to add to the lot.

George Derby Centre, at 7550 Cumberland St., is home to about 300 seniors. Two thirds are veterans from the Second World War and the Korean War.
