Burnaby's Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre is hosting a talk on Japanese migrant workers in the Meiji period, which ran from 1868 to 1912 and marked Japan's shift from feudalism to modernity. Guest speaker Audrey Kobayashi, from Queen's University, will talk about the conditions in Japan at the time, the impact emigration had on Japanese villages and what it was like in Vancouver's early years. The event is Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.

HAPPY HOUSING BIRTHDAY
Burnaby's Misty Ridge housing co-op celebrated its 25th anniversary last Saturday. The co-op is an award-winning 70-unit townhouse complex in the Forest Grove neighbourhood at the foot of Burnaby Mountain. Misty Ridge is a mix of market and subsidized units.
Residents can live in their homes as long as they like, provided that they follow the co-ops rules.
70 YEARS OF SERVICE
The B.C. Old Age Pensioners Organization received recognition for seven decades of service last Monday at the Edmonds Community Centre.
The Edmonds branch of the seniors' advocacy group has been around for 70 years in Burnaby, holding monthly meetings. Local resident and branch president David Price has been involved in the group since the '90s, a role he inherited from his father.
"We have been going for a long time, and it means we should not let it die out. It's too easy to let it die," he said.

KICKING UP THEIR HEELS
Members of the Burnaby Scottish Country Dance Club are kicking up their heels for a new season of dancing this September. The club, now in its 40th year, meets on Mondays at the Edmonds Community Centre, from 7: 15 to 10 p.m.

FREE LEADERSHIP TRAINING FOR WOMEN
The Vancouver and Lower Mainland Family Services Society is hosting a free leadership training program for female immigrants, refugees or visible minority women who've experienced abuse.
"It's basically a free and confidential group for self development for immigrants and refugee or visible minority women who've been abused," said Anna Foschi, workshop facilitator.
In the program, women will learn about self-esteem, assertiveness, anger management, awareness of abuse and ways to get help, information on the legal system in Canada, and leadership and communication skills. There will also be guest speakers. The sessions run from Sept. 24 to Oct. 29, from 10 a.m. to noon on Mondays in the Metrotown area.
