Here & Now: Doctor walk promotes health

BROKE, Ruth Walmsley and NOW reporter all win Kinder Morgan related awards

Burnaby NOW columnist Davidicus Wong took a group of people out for a stroll in Burnaby as part of the Walk With Your Doc event.

“There was a great turnout of our Burnaby family doctors, our patients and other members of the public for a fun and easy walk around the track at Confederation Park,” Wong said. “I opened the event with a talk at the Confederation Community Centre on the health benefits of regular physical activity and how to make it part of everyday living.”

Walk With Your Doc promotes physical activity with events across the province. If you’re familiar with Wong’s column, he often says the best prediction of future health is today’s habits. For more info on the yearly initiative, go to  walkwithyourdoc.ca.

Burnaby’s Ismaili Centre is hosting a travelling exhibition on global development from the Aga Khan Foundation Canada. The show is called Together, and it showcases Canadian efforts to fight global poverty. The interactive, all ages show is housed inside of a truck, making its way across Canada. Environmental awards

Kudos to Burnaby Residents Opposing Kinder Morgan Expansion and group spokesperson Ruth Walmsley. Both received environmental awards from Burnaby city council on May 16. BROKE’s award is for outstanding efforts to educate Burnaby residents, while Walmsley is receiving an award for community stewardship for her efforts raising awareness about the pipeline.

Jen snags gold

Speaking of awards, yours truly landed a Gold at the annual B.C. and Yukon Community Newspaper Association gala recently for coverage of the Kinder Morgan pipeline. The piece that won was a centre spread called the Pipeline Primer, which ran last June and featured everything and anything people need to know about Kinder Morgan’s pipeline expansion proposal.
