Want to learn more about your rights as a renter? The Tenant Resource and Advisory Centre is coming to Burnaby on Monday, Aug. 24 for a talk on tenancy law from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bob Prittie Metrotown library branch. Topics include your rights and responsibilities as a tenant, security deposits, repairs, evictions and illegal entries. This workshop is free, but you need to register by calling 604-436-5400. The library branch is at 6100 Willingdon Ave.
Shoreline cleanup
The Confederation Park Shoreline Cleanup is set for Saturday, Aug. 15. The event runs from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The local cleanup is part of a larger cross-Canada event organized by the Vancouver Aquarium and the World Wildlife Fund. Last year alone, volunteers collected nearly 140,000 kilograms of trash from shorelines across the country. To do your part locally, register at www.shorelinecleanup.ca. Click on Take Action and then Search for a Local Cleanup to find the Confederation Park event. (Thanks to Peter Cech for the heads up on this.) There are also a few other cleanup sites in Burnaby that need a coordinator, so there are tons of volunteer opportunities.
Recycling donation
Kudos to ABC Recycling, which raised nearly $400 and collected 474 pounds of food for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. ABC rounded up the donations at a July 22 company barbecue, where the Burnaby firefighters came out to help flip burgers. ABC Recycling is in Burnaby’s Big Bend area.
Community news workshop anyone?
I’ve had a request to host another community news workshop, and if there is enough interest, I’d be happy to do one this fall or in January. The community news workshop is an evening at the library, usually at the McGill branch, where I teach you how to identify a good community news story, how to write up a proper press release and who to send it to. The workshops are free, but they are always popular. Let me know if you’d like to be put on the wait-list by emailing [email protected]. This event is for community groups, local citizens and anyone who wants to know what they need to do to get their story ideas into a local newspaper.
