The Burnaby Neighbourhood House is celebrating Neighbourhood House Week with an open house on Thursday, May 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at locations in the north and south of the city. There will be a barbecue (by donation) with hotdogs and veggie dogs. The Burnaby Neighbourhood House runs a variety of programs aimed at bringing neighbours closer together. The organization estimates it helps 9,000 people each year. The open house events will be at 4460 Beresford St. and 4463 Hastings. The City of Burnaby is scheduled to declare May 3 to 9 as Neighbourhood House Week at its May 4 council meeting.
More free workshops
Burnaby Food First is organizing more free events on gardening and healthy meal planning. The first event is on Wednesday, May 13, from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. at 2055 Rosser Ave., which is the Brentwood Community Resource Centre. Nutritionist Suzan Anbari will teach people how to create healthy meal plans for families. There are still space available for this workshop.
A second workshop on container gardening on Thursday, May 14, at the Burnaby Neighbourhood House is already full, but there is another one (which Burnaby Food First hasn’t announced yet) scheduled for Wednesday May 20, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Edmonds Community School. Attendees will learn how to create container gardens for small spaces, which is ideal for apartment or condo dwellers. You must register for both workshops by emailing [email protected] or calling 604-618-3581. These events fill up quickly, so register soon. Email the organization if you would like to sign up for alerts for their events. As always, Burnaby Food First also needs volunteers, so if you’re interested in helping out, give them a call.
Caregivers fair
Are you caring for a loved one? There’s help for unpaid caregivers at an upcoming fair in Vancouver this weekend. There will be 25 booths at the fair and five guest speakers. Topics include caring for yourself as a caregiver, legal issues, caring for the dying, home care services and caring for someone with dementia. This annual fair used to take place in Burnaby, but organizer Katherine Willett had to move it to Vancouver because of funding cuts. The fair is on Saturday, May 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the downtown branch of the Vancouver Public Library, at 750 Georgia St. For more information on the fair, go to www.familycaregiversbc.ca or call 1-877-520-3267.
