Renovations at a local seniors’ home received a financial boost, courtesy of the Sweden House Society, an umbrella group for Lower Mainland Swedish associations. The society donated $20,000 to the Swedish Canadian Manor, which is part of a retirement complex on Duthie Avenue in Burnaby.
“It was just amazing that they gave us it,” said Christer Hulten, president of the Swedish Canadian Village (formerly known as the Swedish Canadian Rest Home Association).
The manor has 63 low-income units for seniors aged 55 or older. The money will help pay for renovations already underway. Work includes building new balconies, putting in new carpets, fixing up the common areas, adding new LED lights and new fire exit signs.

Helping the hospice
The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #148 of North Burnaby recently donated $1,500 to Crossroads Hospice Society, which runs a care centre for the dying in Port Moody.
The Legion donated in memory of Brian Simpson and Robert Wilks, two members who spent their last days in hospice care with Crossroads. The non-profit society runs a hospice in Port Moody and bereavement programs in the Tri-Cities. The donated funds will go toward supporting the group’s programs and services.
