Two Burnaby residents are calling on their neighbours to help victims of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Ecuador in April. Daniel and Jessica Colmont are collecting water filters to send to their home country, as the filters are needed to ensure people have clean drinking water.

The Colmonts have teamed up with other Ecuadorians living in Canada, and their goal is to send 100 water filters to quake victims by the end of the month.

To support the cause, order a water filter on Amazon.ca and have it shipped to Daniel’s workplace: Granville Island Publishing, 212-1656 Duranleau St. Vancouver B.C. V6H-3S4.

Pinball Doc

Catch Burnaby’s very own pinball master in action at the DOXA film fest in Vancouver this Thursday. Wizard Mode, a doc featuring Burnaby’s Robert Gagno, is screening in the afternoon on May 12 at the Vancity Theatre at 12:30 p.m. Gagno is one of the world’s top pinball players, and the film captures the challenges he faces living with autism. The May 11 show sold out, so book your tickets early at www.doxafestival.ca. The film will be followed a Q&A with the filmmaker.

Euro Fest on

The European Festival is fast approaching. The annual celebration of all things Europeans takes place on Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29 at Swangard Stadium in Central Park. (Note: The original version of this article had the incorrect location. It's been changed to the correct one.) This year, one of my personal favourites, Orkestar Slivovica will be performing. There will also be French folk music, steel drums, Greek tunes and a local accordion player. Headliners include Yukon Blonde, The Paperboys and Alexis Lynn. Besides music, the festival features food, cultural booths, dancing, kids’ activities and a beer garden. Weekend passes are $10, and there are discounts for online ticket purchases. Gates open at 11 a.m. on both days. Info: www.europeanfestival.ca.
