Interested in starting a Block Watch group in your neighbourhood? Burnaby RCMP are inviting residents to a training session next month.

Concerned about yours and your neighbourhood’s property? If you witnessed suspicious activity, would you report it to the police and neighbours?

If you answered yes to the above questions, then perhaps it’s time you joined Block Watch.

Burnaby RCMP is hosting a Block Watch training session on Nov. 19 for anyone interested in becoming a neighbourhood captain or co-captain. The session runs about two-and-a-half hours long and covers a variety of topics related to the well-known community program.

And joining Block Watch has its benefits, according to the RCMP.

“Neighbourhoods with an active Block Watch show a significant decrease in crime in their area. Past results have shown a 60 per cent decrease in crime,” read a notice on the Burnaby RCMP website.

Other benefits include: learning to recognize and report suspicious activity; access to email safety and information alerts from police; and improved neighbour relationships. Perks of the program also include home security assessments, Block Watch street and window signs and discount on home insurance (only some insurance companies).

Interested parties must complete an application and criminal record check prior to attending the November event. Deadline to apply is Nov. 2. For more information or to begin the application process, contact the Burnaby RCMP at 604-294-7859 or email [email protected].
