The work of Burnaby resident Connor Stefanison will be on display at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa until Aug. 26.
Stefanison received honourable mention in the fourth annual Canadian Wildlife Photography of the Year contest in the birds category for his photo of a loon feeding its chick. CYCLING TOUR
Abbotsford Times columnist Ken Herar made two stops in Burnaby during his Cycling4Diversity trip in May. Herar visited Burnaby's Byrne Creek Secondary and Burnaby South Secondary schools.
"Both visits went really well. The team really enjoyed it. The schools really like it," he said.
Herar's team biked from Mission to Victoria. They made 40 stops in four days, visiting communities along the way to raise awareness about racism and the importance of diversity. To read more about the journey, go to kenherar.blogspot.ca.
FUNDS RAISED
The Burnaby chapter of the Parkinson's Support Group raised more than $300 in June for research in the chapter's first-ever fundraiser.
"Thanks to all who contributed and/or helped out in any way," wrote Linda Dawson in note to the NOW. The group has also decided to meet over the summer on July 9 and Aug. 13, at Confederation Seniors Centre. Parkinson's is a neurodegenerative disease. It's caused by the death of dopamine-producing cells. The brain needs dopamine to control movement, which is why Parkinson's symptoms typically include tremors, rigid muscles and impaired balance.
STRAWBERRY TEA
The strawberry tea at Confederation Seniors' Centre on June 24 sold out.
"We had people mail us their evaluations from home. They wanted us to know how well the volunteers did putting on this event," Lori-Ann Cornwall said.
About 120 people came out to the seniors' event to enjoy an afternoon of strawberry shortcake and live music. The strawberry tea happens at Confederation every year in June.
SCHOOL FAIR
Roughly 175 people came out to the annual bike fair at Second Street Community School despite the rain.
Kids rode their bikes through an obstacle course outside and in the school's hallways.
Norco donated a bike and helmets for prizes, and the Burnaby Lougheed Lion's Club donated a refurbished bike. Martina Kienzle, 5, won the Norco bike, and Faisal Abdulsaboor, from Edmonds Elementary, received the refurbished bike. In all, 17 bikes were donated to the Lion's Club, which fixes them up to be given to children.
