Burnaby’s Charlford House is $10,000 richer as the runner up in a Pacific Blue Cross fundraising contest. The contest pitted various charities against each other, to see which could drum up enough votes for the top prize - $50,000, which went to West Kootenay Community TEETH Clinic Society. Charlford House is a recovery home for women dealing with drug and alcohol addiction.
Storytelling circle
Burnaby’s Oral Storytelling Circle picks up again at the McGill library branch this month. The next session on Feb. 28 features local residents sharing their tales of “finding freedom.” Admission is free, but preregister to attend by calling 604-299-8955.
New digs sought
The Burnaby Neighbourhood House is still looking for a new home. The non-profit community group has two locations, and the north office on Hastings must move sometime in spring, as the building will be torn down and turned into townhouses. If anyone knows of a free or cheap place, preferably in the Heights, with at least 1,000 to 1,500 square feet and a store front, contact executive director Antonia Beck at 604-431-0400.

Mark your calendar for the Nikkei Centre’s 10th annual flea market and Japanese book sale on Feb. 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale features second-hand items, a kids’ zone, and Japanese books, comics and magazines. The centre is at 6688 Southoaks Cres., and admission is free.
