A new exhibition of paintings by ChiMing Yeung, Maritime Memories and Others, is on at the gallery from May 4 to 26.

The exhibition opens with a reception this Saturday, May 5, from 2 to 4 p.m.

The Deer Lake Gallery is at 6584 Deer Lake Ave. It's open noon to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Cultural comedy

A Burnaby performer is being featured in an upcoming night of sketch comedy.

Kallol Mitra is part of the fun when I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Chicken!: The Fellowship of the Butter Chicken! takes to the stage May 9 to 12 at the CBC's Studio 700 in Vancouver.

The comedy night is presented by South Asian Arts and Bollywood Shenanigans, following up on previous popular Butter Chicken shows.

Mitra is joined by Kulveer Taggar, Aga Postawska, Munish Sharma, Leena Manro and Sandhya Sharma.

"Race, sex, diaspora, parental expectations, village life: no topic is out of bounds for these comedy crusaders as they act, sing and Bollywood their brains out in brandnew skits," a press release explains.

The show runs six times over four days, with latenight shows on May 11 and 12.

Tickets are $20 in advance and can be bought at Main Video, 6621 Main St. in Vancouver or Kamal's Video Palace, 8268 Scott Rd. in Surrey or online at www.eventbrite.ca.

Standup comedy

Also on the comedy front, don't forget about Stand Up for Mental Health.

The comedy show is kicking off Mental Health Week on Monday, May 7 at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.

The evening features David Granirer, a comic, counsellor and the founder of Stand Up for Mental Health - a group that teaches stand-up comedy to people with mental illness as a way of building confidence and fighting public stigma.

He'll be joined onstage by the Stand Up for Mental Health 2012 class, who'll be stepping onstage for their first public perfor-mance.

The show also features Susan Hansen, a program alumna, as well as Burnaby comedians Jordana Pratt and Ardell Brophy-Fitzpatrick, and headliner Tanyalee Davis - a Winnipeg native who has been headlining comedy clubs across North America and the United Kingdom.

The show is at 8 p.m. in the Shadbolt's James Cowan Theatre, and tick-ets are $20. You can buy them through the box office at 604-205-3000 or online at tickets.shadbolt centre.com.

Want to be in The Nutcracker?

Burnaby dancers are being invited to audition for a holiday classic production.

Goh Ballet is inviting young dancers to try out for roles in its production of The Nutcracker, which will take to the stage at the Centre in Vancouver for Performing Arts from Dec. 19 to 23.

Open auditions are being held on Sunday, May 6, from 10: 30 a.m. to 5: 30 p.m. at the Scotiabank Dance Centre on Davie Street in Vancouver.

Children aged six to eight are set for 10: 30 to 11: 30 a.m., with eight-to 11-year-olds from 11: 45 a.m. to 1 p.m., children 10 and up from 1: 15 to 2: 45 p.m., and men and women (over age 13) from 3 to 5: 30 p.m.

Dancers who are chosen will have a chance to share the stage with performers from the New York City Ballet and to dance to the live musical accompaniment of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra.
