The Save-On-Foods at Metrotown in Burnaby is closing on Dec. 29, according to an email sent to the NOW on behalf of Julie Dickson Olmstead, spokesperson for the Overwaitea Food Group.
"We can confirm that we've announced to our team that we'll be closing our Metrotown Save-On-Foods store on Dec. 29.
"Sales have been in decline at this store for years because of the increase in low-paying non-union competitors in the market," the email from the media relations department stated. "In addition, we're facing escalating business declines as a result of the major renovation taking place at the mall. This sales decline, combined with our uncompetitive operating costs, makes it impossible for us to continue to keep the store open."
