This Saturday, kids will be lining up at the Metrotown library branch to collect medals for reading over the summer.

The library's annual summer reading club award ceremony recognizes hundreds of children's reading accomplishments through participating in the program.

There will be a pancake breakfast from 8: 30 to 11 a.m. at Burnaby Civic Square, just outside the Metrotown library branch, at 6100 Willingdon Ave. Breakfast tickets are $5 for adults, $2 for children, and proceeds go to the children's library collection. There will also be face painting and kids' activities.

FOOD DONATIONS SOUGHT

Fall is fast approaching, and so is the Thanksgiving call for donations of food for low-income families. Volunteers behind the fourth annual B.C. Thanksgiving Food Drive are working with the local food bank to collect donations in time for the holiday. They will be leaving donation bags between Sept. 10 and 14 in various neighbourhoods throughout Burnaby.

People can fill the bags with donations before volunteers pick them up on Sept. 15. If you don't receive a bag on your doorstep but would like to contribute, drop off donations at the Burnaby collection station at 5280 Kincaid St. on Sept. 15. For more information, call Bruce McLean at 778-330-7343 or visit bctfooddrive.org.

CELEBRATING FIRST YEAR

A non-profit Brentwood area coffee shop is celebrating one year in business, and all specialty drinks will be $1 this Sunday. Connections Coffee House, a volunteer-run café backed by a local church, is at 5063 Anola Dr., just off of Springer and Halifax. The volunteers all get proper barista training, and I can tell you from personal experience, the coffee is better than at Starbucks, so $1 for a mocha is a steal. For more on the café, visit connectionscoffee.ca.
