Families can learn about local plants and animals at Fraser River Discovery Centre's River Basin Days on June 12

River Basin Days are heading to Glenbrook Ravine Park to help folks learn about local plants and animals.

Fraser River Discovery Centre’s next River Basin Days is taking place at Glenbrook Ravine Park on Saturday, June 12 from 2 to 3 p.m.

“If you have every wondered about the kinds of plants and animals that live in our local parks, this month’s River Basin Days is for you,” said Stephen Bruyneel, FRDC’s director of external relations and development. “We are going to Glenbrook Ravine Park in New Westminster to learn how to identify what is there using the easy-to-use Seek app.”

Guests will need a device, like a phone or tablet, that can run apps and is connected to data. With that and the Seek app, people can identify many of the plants, animals or fungus they may find.

It’s like Pokémon Go, but for nature, Bruyneel said.

“Join us on a guided walk as we discover a whole new world living all around us,” he added. “We will walk about one kilometre through the park, so please dress appropriately and bring water as well. June weather is getting warm.”

River Basin Days is a series of outdoor public programs for families that takes place on the second Saturday of every month at rotating locations around the Fraser River Basin. Fraser River Discovery Centre staff will guide families through one hour of activities, experiments and art projects, where they’ll learn about the biodiversity of the mighty Fraser.

COVID-19 safety protocols will also be in place for this activity, including the need to pre-register. When people register for River Basin Days, they’ll receive details on where to meet on June 12.
