Rotary club members have been collecting boots for kids this winter. The annual initiative has been growing over the years.

Hundreds of Burnaby students were prepared for the recent snowfall thanks to a local initiative that supplies kids with boots and socks.

The Rotary Club of Burnaby – Deer Lake collected 250 pairs of boots to the Boots for Kids program that is now in its third year. The program has seen donations grow as the years have gone by, from 80 pairs during their first delivery to 250 pairs of boots this winter. The local Rotary club started the campaign because there were too many students who have inadequate footwear for the winter months. But besides the point of keeping students’ feet warm, the boots also help boost self-esteem by improving the way the kids feel about themselves, according to club member Janice Froese.

The local Rotary branch is one of three clubs in Burnaby that are part of a worldwide network of 1.2 million volunteers who fight hunger, improve health, provide education and job training while promoting promote peace.

The Rotarians are looking for donations of boots, money and gift cards for any retailers where boots can be purchased.
