SFU lockout over

Support staff for Simon Fraser University's student society are back on the job after a three-month lockout. "We were able to reach a deal," said society president Jeff McCann.

Support staff for Simon Fraser University's student society are back on the job after a three-month lockout.

"We were able to reach a deal," said society president Jeff McCann.

McCann said the two parties came to an agreement, through mediation, that wages and hours for current employees would be protected, but new hires would make less. (The staff members make $30.48 per hour, but new employees will make $25, he said.) The society can also downsize through attrition, something that wasn't previously possible, McCann added.

Back in July, the student society locked out its staff after labour negotiations fell apart. The workers, represented by CUPE Local 3338, were facing wage cuts, and the society was citing financial troubles.

Staff were back to work on Oct. 11, and students services, like Out on Campus (a safe space for queers students) and the women's centre, are open again.
