SPOTLIGHT ON: Parenting workshop

WHAT IS IT:

Information Children offers a workshop series on Parenting Toddlers and Preschoolers, running Mondays from May 1 to June 12 at the McGill branch of Burnaby Public Library. Sessions run Mondays from 10:10 a.m. to noon (except May 22, when the library is closed for Victoria Day).

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

Everyone who has parented a small person knows that kids under the age of five bring some, shall we say, challenges that are disproportionate to the size of the human being in question. The workshop will look at issues such as effective communication, the link between behaviour and temperament, understanding child development, having appropriate behavioural expectations, and responding to children’s misbehaviour “in ways that promote growth and self-regulation,” as a write-up says.

SAY THAT IN REAL WORDS, PLEASE:

Does your kid have temper tantrums? Have you dealt with separation anxiety? Is your child occasionally, er, socially challenged by such skills as sharing and turn-taking? Than this workshop series is for you.

WHO RUNS IT?

Information Children is a not-for-profit organization and registered charity founded in 1979 by Jean Koepke, a Simon Fraser University family studies and psychology professor. It’s still based at SFU’s Burnaby campus, and it works to provide no- or low-cost support services for parents.  Its services include a parenting helpline, parenting coaching, parenting groups and more. See www.informationchildren.com.

DO I NEED TO SIGN UP?

Yes. Space is limited, and a limited number of child-care spots is also available. See www.informationchildren.com, email [email protected] or call 778-782-3548.
