It's that time of year: the buds are beginning to pop up, the days are getting longer, and there's a bit less rain falling from the sky.
Spring is on the way, and with it, spring break for local children. In Burnaby, students are off school next week, March 19 to 23. There's nothing like a little free time to bring about complaints of boredom, so to stave off the "nothing to do" lament, here's a few suggestions for what's up around town in the coming week:
PUPPET FUN
Head over to Burnaby Village Museum every day from Monday, March 19 to Sunday, March 25, noon to 4 p.m. for their annual spring break scavenger hunt fun. This year, it's dubbed Puppets and Pageantry, with a scavenger hunt, crafts, puppets, entertainment and more. Cost is $6.50 per person for ages two-plus. See www. burnabyvillagemuseum.ca.
MOVIE MATINEES
Take in a kid-friendly flick with free movie matinees happening all week long at the Tommy Douglas branch of the Burnaby Public Library. Films are best suited for children aged five and older, and kids must be accompanied by a caregiver. Starting at 1 p.m. each day from Monday to Friday next week, the scheduled movies are: The Smurfs (March 19); Herbie Fully Loaded (March 20); Zookeeper (March 21); The Parent Trap (March 22); Hop (March 23).
Call the library at 604522-3971 for more information.
ON THE ICE
Lace up the skates and hit the ice. Check out Burnaby 8Rinks where they'll be having their popular toonie ($2) skates each day throughout the spring break week.
See http: //icesports. com/burnaby8rinks and click on public sessions to see the schedule.
GET CREATIVE
If none of the scheduled events fit your calendar, get creative at home with some new arts and crafts or a stack of books from the library.
