This weekend is a busy one. We’ve got a couple of fun festivals lined up for you, along with some other interesting events to keep you entertained.
We’ve had a nice stretch of hot weather, but the forecast calls for light rain on Saturday and intermittent showers on Sunday. Here’s our Top 5 list of fun things to do this weekend.
1 Get festive at the  Edmonds City Fair on Sunday, July 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Edmonds Street, between Canada Way and Kingsway. The fair features kids’ rides, food, a classic car and motorcycle show and a petting zoo.
Burnaby Neighbourhood House is hosting an international village, a series of booths set up by people showcasing the cultures of their homelands. Entertainment includes Rainshadow, Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley impersonators and a talent show. Parking restrictions will be in effect, starting at 7:30 a.m. and running till 8 p.m. Organizers ask that people walk, bike or take transit to the fair.
2Swing by the Fiji Festival at Swangard Stadium on Saturday July 19, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The annual celebration highlights Fijian culture. There will be singing, dancing, soccer tournaments, vendors and rides for the kids, and admission is free. The stadium is in Central Park.
3Take the kids outside to play at the official opening for the newly designed playground at Confederation Park. The playground now has a rubberized surface, and there are spinner bowls, a see-saw for four kids, climbing rocks and more. Next to the park is a water play-area, so the kids can keep cool. The park is at Beta Avenue and Albert Street.
The opening ceremony is at 10:30 a.m., complete with local politicians and a ribbon-cutting.
4 Check out the Farm Shindig, on Sunday, July 20, from 4 to 10 p.m. at Urban Digs Farm. The event will include farm tours, music, food and drink. The Urban Digs Farm is a small Burnaby farm at 4992 Byrne Rd. that supplies restaurants and local families with meat and eggs. The public will have a chance to get acquainted with the FarmCity Fresh Cart, a new mobile food cart that functions like a mini farmers’ market. Admission is $10; tickets are available on Eventbrite.ca by searching “FarmCity Co-op Summer Shindig.”
5 Check out the free dementia workshop at the Tian-Jin Temple on Saturday, July 19 from 2 to 3 p.m.
