Coyote at Deer Lake Park
A walk in the park: NOW reader Tim Watts captured some winter scenes at Deer Lake Park during a walk a few winters ago, when he came across a coyote on a snowy trail.

The year is coming to a close, but there are still plenty of fun ways to finish off the holiday season in Burnaby. From train rides to bike races, there is lots happening in the city.

Here's our Top 5 list for Dec. 27 to 29.

1 Get a deal at the boxing week sales throughout the city. Many of the smaller shops as well as the big box stores offer deals all throughout the week - not just on Boxing Day itself.

If you're not quite done with the consumer frenzy that took place before Christmas, get back out there and find yourself something nice - or maybe start shopping for next Christmas. (Is anyone that organized?)

2 Get chug chug chugging along at the Santa Express miniature train at Lougheed Town Centre. The train runs until Dec. 28, so if you missed out before Christmas, take the kids down for a ride before it shuts down for the season. Volunteers from the B.C. Society of Model Engineers offer rides on their mini train around Santa's Wonderland during mall hours. Rides are by donation to the BCSME.

3 Get cheering at the Burnaby Velodrome Club from Friday to Monday for some of the greatest track cycling in the Pacific Northwest. Feast your eyes on some of the best talent in the world as they battle for the right to be crowned 4 Day Champions. The show begins on Friday at 6 p.m. Admission is $5 at the door; children 12 and under are free. The club is located in the Harry Jerome Sports Centre, 7564 Barnet Highway. Go to www.burnabyvelodrome.ca/fourday.php for more information.

4 Get in one last Christmas celebration with a new children's play by the Open World for Kids Foundation, Holiday Miracles or Yaga the Witch is in Opposition. The play is taking place at the Serbian Cultural Centre, 7837 Canada Way, on Dec. 28. The program includes a show featuring favourite fairy tale characters, cartoons, games and entertainment, a lottery, dance around the Christmas tree and of course, gifts from Santa Claus. Children's tickets are $25 (which includes a gift) and adult tickets are $12. Tickets will not be sold at the door. For more information and to buy tickets, go to openworldforkids.com/?p=388.

5 Get some peace and quiet after all the hullabaloo of the holidays at one of Burnaby's parks. Wander Deer Lake Park, and escape the cold by taking in some of the cultural offerings there - from Illuminations at Heritage Christmas to the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts to the Burnaby Art Gallery. Or spend an afternoon in your favourite green space, relaxing and reflecting on the past year.
