Don’t let the impending winter weather keep you indoors this weekend.
Check out our Top 5 list of things to do on Nov. 7 and 8. There are two sports events to help you stay active, a craft fair at the Nikkei Centre, a model train show for the kids and a football game at Swangard Stadium.
1 Take the kids to the annual model train show on Saturday, Nov. 8 and Sunday, Nov. 9 at Cameron Recreation Centre, at 9523 Cameron St.
The event features model trains, scale models, dioramas, computerized trains, LEGO displays and more. Attendees can ask experienced modellers questions, and there will be children’s activities.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $5 for youth. Info: www.bctrains.org.
2 Check out the craft and bake fair on Saturday, Nov. 8 and Sunday, Nov. 9 at the Nikkei Centre, at 6688 Southoaks Cres. from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
There will be tons of Japanese-themed items for sale, including traditional textiles. On both days, there will be Japanese-style crafts, knitted items, hair pieces, soaps jewelry, carvings, textiles, home baking and kimonos.
There will also be Japanese sweets and food. Admission is free. On Sunday, as an added bonus, there will be video interviews from internment camp survivors from 2 to 4 p.m. The videos are part of a new educational training tool for teachers.
3 Attention hockey fans! The Rogers Hometown Hockey tour is coming to Bill Copeland Sports Centre, at 3676 Kensington Ave. on Saturday, Nov. 8 and Sunday, Nov. 9. Famous sportscaster Ron MacLean will be at the free outdoor hockey festival. Gates open at noon. There will be activities for all ages, local bands, a winter market and a meet-and-greet with NHL alumni.
4Simon Fraser University takes on the number 1 team in the Great Northwest Conference in NCAA Division 2 football on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. at Swangard Stadium.
SFU will play Azusa Pacific from California, who are 5-0 in the conference so far. Tickets are $10 for a seat or $8 for a bench. Youth pay $8, and students get in for free.
5 Pull out your racquet and join the inaugural badminton tournament on Sunday, Nov. 9, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Bonsor Recreation Complex.
The tourney is designed to draw out new players and give experienced players a chance to compete.
There will be singles matches for various age categories, and doubles partners will be determined following the preliminary rounds. There will also be snacks. Info: 604-297-4597.
