1 Stop by the Burnaby Art Gallery for a Mandarin language tour of Eli Bornowsky’s exhibition on Saturday, Jan. 17.
The tour, led by gallery guide Dong Yue Su, runs from noon to 1 p.m. It’s also one of your last chances to check out the show, which ends on Sunday.
The gallery is at 6344 Deer Lake Ave., and the tour is from noon to 1 p.m. The suggested donation is $5. Info: www.burnabyartgallery.ca, or call 604-297-4422.
2 Get closer to nature on Burnaby Mountain with a special City of Burnaby event on Saturday, Jan. 17. Greg Ferguson, a professional biologist, will lead a walk through the conservation area, pointing out different types of habitat and species. He’ll show people the characteristics of native and non-native species.
The walk mostly focuses on plants and how wildlife and people use them in winter. There will be a lunch break at the top of the mountain.
While you’re there, keep an eye out for the pine grosbeak, a red-feathered finch that’s rare in these parts but has been spotted on Burnaby Mountain, close to Horizons restaurant. 3 St. Thomas More Collegiate is holding its junior boys’ and girls’ Chancellor basketball tournament from Jan. 15 to Saturday, Jan. 17. STM girls have New Westminster on their side, while the boys have 10th Avenue rival Byrne Creek Bulldogs to contend with.
Tournament final for girls starts at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at STM (Kingsway at 12th Avenue). The boys’ final follows at 7 p.m.
4 Magic Hour at Burnaby’s Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre starts this Saturday Jan. 17. The Instant Coffee Artist Collective has pulled some pieces from the museum’s permanent collection for Magic Hour, a term that refers to the times just after sunset and before sunrise.
The exhibition opening is from 3 to 5 p.m. and includes unwrapping of archival items and a “self DJ station” with albums from the museum’s music collection. The show runs until April 5.
5 Learn how playing is an important part of healthy childhood development at a free workshop sponsored by the city and the Burnaby Early Childhood Development Committee.
The event is on Saturday, Jan. 17 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Tommy Douglas library branch. Participants will learn how playing can help children with their academic, social, physical and emotional skills.
There will be ideas on little things parents can do to help encourage play. Register by calling 604-522-3971. The library branch is at 7311 Kingsway.
