1 Take in the new exhibit at the Burnaby Art gallery this weekend. Visualizing a Culture for Strangers is a collection of 19th century Chinese export paintings, a genre that was developed in China to cater to Western markets. The show opened on Jan. 30 and is on until March 29. The Burnaby Art Gallery is at 6344 Deer Lake Ave. and is open Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
2 Check out the new book nook in the Capitol Hill neighbourhood in Harbourview Park.
Local residents are encouraged to borrow a book or leave one behind in the covered wooden shelves installed in the park. There will be an opening celebration for the book nook on Sunday, Feb. 1 at 1:30 p.m. Harbourview Park is at the north end of Grosvenor Avenue. For info on the project, email [email protected].
3 Here's another one for bibliophiles: The Bob Prittie library branch is hosting a pop-up library outside of Bonsor Recreation Complex on Saturday, Jan. 31, from 8:30 to 11 a.m.
People can sign up for library cards, peruse material and even sign out books, all without stepping foot in a library. There will be material on hand for children, as well as adults. The complex is at 6550 Bonsor Ave. Info: 604-436-5426.
4 Head to the Bill Copeland Sports Centre for Carnival Skate on Saturday, Jan. 31 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. The French-themed event will include face painting, French crafts and games. Admission is $2.95 for kids 12 and under or $5 for adults. The centre is at 3676 Kensington Ave.
5 Try your hand at table tennis at the Bonsor Recreation Complex on Sunday, Feb. 1.
Players can sign up as singles or doubles and compete for prizes in four divisions. The games are on from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and are open to anyone aged 13 or older. Cost to play is $9.52. Sign up online at Burnaby.ca/webreg and use barcode 338704, 338705, 338706, 338707, depending on your division.
