- Do not miss the annual European Festival this Saturday and Sunday at Swangard Stadium. Weekend passes are only $10, and you get access to the best food, art and performances from more than 30 nations. The festival is from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. There will be food tents, a beer garden, a children’s area, a marketplace and an arts plaza. Delhi2Dublin is the headlining band on Saturday at 8 p.m. on the main stage. Derrival plays Sunday at 7 p.m., also on the main stage. This year’s featured country is Turkey, and there will be a special Turkish performance. Children under 12 get in for free. - Celebrate Environment Week at the main kickoff event at city hall on Saturday, May 30, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the outer courtyard by the farmers’ market. There will be live music, farmers’ market prize money and guided tours of a nearby heron colony. Exhibitors include Sprouting Chefs, the Burnaby Lake Park Association, ElectroRecycle B.C., Encorp Pacific, Fortis, Sustainable SFU and more. - Get closer to nature on a special walk through Central Park with biologist Pamela Zevit on Sunday, May 31, from 9 to 11 a.m. Central Park is home to many native species, but there are some invasive types, as well. Zevit will talk about invasive turtles and the infamous snakehead that spurred the Great Snakehead Hunt of 2012. The walk is part of the city’s parks department series. - Help local residents and streamkeepers clean up Eagle Creek this Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is hosted by the Eagle Creek Streamkeepers Society and theGreystone Village Tenants Association, an affiliation of the Metro Vancouver Housing Corporation. Meet at Greystone Village Shopping Plaza, at 1601 Burnwood Dr. Eagle Creek provides natural habitat for wild salmon. By cleaning up the stream, you will help the local salmon population thrive. There will also be activities for kids, including balloon art, face painting and crafts.
- Learn how to divert waste from landfills at the B.C. Recycles Summer Ambassador Tour on Saturday, May 30, from noon to 3 p.m. in Confederation Park. This family-friendly event includes music from Virgin Radio, freebies from London Drugs and information on recycling. Info: www.bcrecycles.ca.
