  1. The Burnaby Blues + Roots Festival is on this weekend, but with the forecast calling for showers, we suggest you take raingear to stay warm and dry. Umbrellas are not allowed, as they block the view of the stage. The show is on Saturday, Aug. 8, and gates open at noon, while the shows run from 1 to 10 p.m. Performers include The Sheepdogs, Ruthie Foster, and Lee Fields & The Expressions. (See related story on page 3.) General admission tickets are still available online, at tickets.shadboltcentre.com, for $66 (which includes a “convenience fee”). You can also buy tickets at the gate, but you will pay $75. The show is at Deer Lake Park.
  2. It’s your last chance to attend a free workshop on the basics of streamkeeping. Evergreen, an environmental group, is hosting the last session of Uncover Your Creeks, a lesson on how to monitor water quality and remove invasive species to help improve the health of local waterways. The workshop is on Saturday, Aug. 8 from 9 a.m. to noon at Jim Lorimer Park in Burnaby, just one block south of the Gilmore Skytrain Station. Bring weather-appropriate gear. Gloves, tools and refreshments will be pro-vided.
  3. Pull out your knitting needles, the Tommy Douglas library’s Knit2gether crew is gathering on Saturday, Aug. 8, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a knitting and crocheting session. This popular get-together attracts people of all ages and skill levels. The knitters tend to be a friendly bunch, who will help teach each other new techniques. Bring some cookies to share if you like. Refreshments will be provided. The library branch is at 7311 Kingsway.
  4. The Burnaby farmers’ market is on this Saturday, but you may want to get there early before things get busy for the Burnaby Blues + Roots Festival, which starts at noon. The usual parking spots will still be available. The market runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be organic produce, condiments, herbs, bread and more. There are also artisanal products from local vendors. The market is in the parking lot of city hall, at 4949 Canada Way.
  5. Do you love animals? Consider giving some wild critters a helping hand by volunteering with the Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C. The non-profit, based at Burnaby Lake, needs volunteers for the outreach, animal care, answering the helpline and transportation. This is the busiest time of year for the association, and they need all the help they can get. To sign up, visit www.wildliferescue.ca and click on the volunteer tab.
