Top 5 things to do this weekend

Best Burnaby events for June 28 and 29
Music in the Park
From left, Lindy and Jim McQueen and Jeff Neufeld are the creative minds behind Music in the Park, a free, outdoor musical performance series in the Edmonds neighbourhood.

The weather forecast calls for rain on Saturday, and sun on Sunday with some isolated showers, so plan your weekend accordingly. Here are our top picks for Saturday, June 28, and Sunday June 29.
1 Celebrate National Aboriginal Day at the Metrotown library branch on Sunday, June 29, from 3 to 4 p.m. The library is hosting a storytelling event with some guests from Bellingham. The theme is: our home, our land. There will be refreshments served, and there’s no need to register. The library branch is at 6100 Willingdon Ave. (National Aboriginal Day was actually on June 21, but the library is celebrating it this weekend.)
2 Don’t miss the kick-off event for Music in the Park, on Sunday, June 29, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Edmonds Park Plaza, just behind the new Edmonds Community Centre.

Edmonds People In Community, a new residents’ association for the Edmonds neighbourhood, is hosting the event, and there will be free outdoor performances on the last Sunday of each month, through till August.
Bring a blanket or chair and some picnic food, and enjoy an evening of live music. Music in the Park highlights local talent; anyone interested in auditioning can email [email protected].
3 Swing by the farmers’ market on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Burnaby city hall parking lot, at 4949 Canada Way. The market has conventional and organic fruits and vegetables, prepared food, and crafts for sale. There’s live music every week, a book exchange and a children’s play area.
4 The Burnaby Tennis Open starts this Saturday (and runs till July 6) at the Burnaby Tennis Club at 3890 Kensington Ave. The matches start at 10 a.m., weather permitting. The Burnaby Open is an annual provincewide tournament drawing men and women of all ages and abilities. The Burnaby Tennis Open is the second largest tennis tournament in the province. More than 425 competitors are expected, and there are more than 20 different categories, including wheelchair divisions. The top prize is $2,500.
5 The Canada open for table tennis runs from June 27 to 29 at Burnaby’s SFU campus in the gym at 8888 University Dr. Six countries will be playing for $10,000 in prize money. Tickets are $10 per day, available by calling 604-278-5100. Info: www.ttcan.ca.
