Summer is still holding strong this weekend, with sun and highs around 25 for Saturday and Sunday. If you're looking for something fun to do, we have an excellent and eclectic collection of events lined up for you, including some science activities, the Terry Fox Run, a free seniors' lunch, a trunk sale and an opportunity to clean up the city.
1 Head up the hill to SFU for the 20th anniversary of Science AL!VE, a day of fun, science based activities for the whole family.
The event runs on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the applied science building on the Burnaby campus, at 8888 University Dr. There will be hands-on activities, science demonstrations, and engineering challenges. Admission is free.
2 Roll up your sleeves and help the Kingsway Imperial Neighbourhood Association clean up the hood on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 10 a.m. to noon. KINA is hosting the community cleanup and a free barbecue afterwards for the participants. Meet at the courtyard in Burlington Square, at 5172 Kingsway. Registration is at 9:30 a.m., and the cleanup is from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by the barbecue.
3 Here's one for the over-55 crowd. The Bonsor Recreation Complex is hosting a free lunch on Saturday, Sept. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for Multicultural Seniors Day. There will be multicultural dancing, music and food. Bonsor is at 6550 Bonsor Ave.
4 Put on your running shoes for the 34th annual Terry Fox Run at Swangard Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 14. Registration starts at 9 a.m., and the run follows a 10 a.m. ceremony. The routes vary in length - two, five and 10 kilometres - and participants can walk or run. Refreshments are free, and there are activities for kids. Participants make donations to do the run, and the money goes to the Terry Fox Foundation, which uses 84 per cent of the funds for cancer research.
5 Go on a treasure hunt at the car trunk sale on Saturday, Sept. 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre, at 3676 Kensington Ave. People will be selling used items out of the trunks of their vehicles. Admission is free for buyers.
