Fall is officially upon us, and as the weather gets wetter, we are selecting activities to keep you warm and busy indoors. Here are our picks for this weekend:
Creekside Community Church and the Burnaby Task Force on Homelessness are teaming up to collect donations to help the homeless this winter. Anyone with new or gently used items to give can stop by the church at 6050 Sussex Ave. on Saturday, Oct. 11, between noon and 2:30 p.m. The items most needed are warm blankets, sleeping bags, winter coats, hotel-sized toiletries, toothbrushes, toothpaste, men’s and women’s underwear (all sizes), jeans for both men and women (small sizes only), tarps, towels and canned food.
Simon Fraser University and the Native Education College are hosting the All Nations Basketball Classic Tournament this weekend, from Friday, Oct. 10 to Sunday, Oct. 12. The tourney takes place at SFU’s Burnaby campus in the Lorne Davies Complex. The tournament is open to women’s and men’s seniors divisions and the men’s master division. For those interested in playing, there is a $100 entry fee, and there will be trophies and awards. Info: [email protected] or 778-877-3887.
Pick up your Thanksgiving dinner produce at the Burnaby farmers’ market this Saturday between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. The market is on every Saturday, in the north parking lot of Burnaby City Hall, at 4949 Canada Way. The market runs till Oct. 25.
Get in touch with your creative side by signing up for one of the Shadbolt Centre’s many arts classes. The fall schedule is out, and there is a ton of options to choose from, catering to all skill levels. To check out the new catalogue online, go to tinyurl.com/ShadboltGuide. Hard copies are also available at the Shadbolt (6450 Deer Lake Ave.), the Burnaby Art Gallery, the city’s recreation centres and the City of Burnaby kiosk at Metropolis at Metrotown.
Check out the Asahi Baseball tribute game on Saturday, Oct. 11 at Robert Burnaby Park. The opening ceremony is at 12:30 p.m., and the game starts at 1 p.m. Top Nikkei youth players will pay tribute to the Vancouver Asahi Baseball Team, which formed in 1914. They played out of Vancouver’s Oppenheimer Park and were successful, but the team members were separated during the Japanese Internment of the Second World War.Admission is free, and everyone is welcome. But be forewarned: the game will be rescheduled if it’s raining, and that’s what the forecast called for at press time.
