- Take a spin at the Burnaby Velodrome Club this weekend, where cyclists can partake in a free, 90-minute trail session. The velodrome is a circular curved track, where the faster you ride, the more you climb the walls. This club is hosting an open house on Saturday, May 2, from 9 to 11:15 a.m., and 2 to 4:15 p.m. and Sunday, May 3, from 10 to 12:15 p.m., and at 3 p.m. You must preregister to ride. - Roll up your sleeves and help out at EPIC’s annual Clean Sweep on Saturday, May 2. The Edmonds residents’ association is spending the day cleaning up the neighbourhood. This event is a fun way to give back to the community while getting to know your neighbours. Meet at the Gordon Presbyterian Church at 7457 Edmonds St. Registration is at 9:45 a.m., while the cleanup is from 10 a.m. to noon. There’s a free barbecue for participants at noon. - Celebrate the season’s opening at the Burnaby Village Museum this Saturday, May 2 from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There will be tours of the vintage carousel, a scavenger hunt and a new exhibit which showcases the history of gardens and agriculture in Burnaby. (See related story on page 3.) New this year is home grown harvest, the heritage gardening project where the museum selects typical but unusual things you can grow in Burnaby. Admission is free, but carousel rides cost $2.55. The museum is at 6501 Deer Lake Ave.
- Jane’s Walk is on this weekend, and there are several options in Burnaby to choose from. Jane’s Walk is an annual event where local residents walk together, explore their communities and get to know their neighbours. The Heights Neighbourhood Association is hosting a one-and-a-half-hour Jane’s Walk in the Heights on Saturday, May 2. Meet in the Burnaby Heights Park playground at 10 a.m. Tourism Burnaby is also hosting Jane’s Walks every Friday at noon throughout May. Meet at the Patterson SkyTrain station. The worldwide movement is to honour Jane Jacobs, an urban planner and activist. For more on the movement go to janeswalk.org.
- Have you heard of the Spartan Race? It’s a franchise-run event, where participants pay to put their physical skills to the test through a muddy obstacle course. The folks behind Spartan Race are offering a free workout training session on Saturday, May 2 from noon to 2 on Confederation Park, at 250 Willingdon Ave. Bring a towel and water. To register, go to spartanrace.ca/western-canada-spartan-workout. The workout is free, and you don’t have to be signed up for an official Spartan Race to participate.
