Do not miss the kickoff show for Music in the Park, the annual series of free outdoor musical performances in the Edmonds neighbourhood. This year’s series starts Sunday, June 28, and includes vocalist Jada McKenzie-Moore, singer-guitarist Sabia Hurley, and Rainshadow with local crooner Stephen Scaccia. The show starts at 6:30 p.m. and runs till about 8:30 p.m. The concert will be in the plaza at the Edmonds Community Centre. Bring a blanket or chairs and some snacks, and make an evening picnic out of it. All Music in the Park events are free and organized by EPIC, the Edmonds residents’ association. Go bargain hunting at the neighbourhood flea market on Saturday, June 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Willingdon Community Centre. There will be all kinds of goods, including figurines, kitchenware, books, clothes, toys, jewlery, furniture and miscellany. Admission is free. The centre is at 1491 Carleton Ave.
Test your motorcycling skills at a free safety course, courtesy of the Burnaby RCMP. Local police are inviting the public out on June 27, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., to learn about safer motorcycling habits, especially for riding at dawn and dusk. The event includes a recertification course based on the RCMP’s own motorcycle training, and participants are entered in a contest where the prize is $1,000 of cycling safety gear. The event takes place at the Riverway Sports Complex, at 8605 Nelson Ave.
Head down to Barnet Marine Park to catch the action at the annualoutrigger canoe race on Saturday, June 27. The Lotus Sport Club is hosting the event, and hundreds of paddlers from all over the Pacific Northwest, will be competing. The races are on from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., but bring a lawn chair and a book to read, because once the paddlers are off, they will be gone for a while, paddling anywhere between 11 and 17 kilometres up Indian Arms or around nearby islands before heading back to the park. Celebrate Italian Heritage Month at the McGill library branch on Saturday, June 27 from 2 to 2:45 p.m. The Vancouver Italian Folk Chorus will be performing Italian songs, and admission is free. The library is at 4595 Albert St.
