  1. Glean some inspiration from the demonstration garden at Burnaby Village Museum this weekend. The garden was sown with seeds suggested by local gardeners, and they are all plants of veggies that fare well in Burnaby’s climate and soil conditions. There are some unusual items growing – like chayote, for instance – and there will be information available on recipes and how to prepare and preserve the harvest. The museum, at 6501 Deer Lake Ave., is open 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free.
  2. Looking for a good cardio workout this weekend? Try Burnaby's version of the Grouse Grind. The Velodrome Trail starts in the Harry Jerome Sports Centre parking lot and runs up the north side of Burnaby Mountain. It's considered an intermediate-level hike, with approximately 500 steps over three kilometres and an elevation gain of 240 metres. When you get to the top, you'll emerge close to the totem poles by Horizons Restaurant. Pack a lunch and take a camera, because the views of the Burrard Inlet and Indian Arm are incredible. Save this trek for Saturday, when it will likely rain less. Some people park at the top by Horizons and hike down the mountain and then back up, since parking at the bottom can be a challenge.
  3. Don't miss the free outdoor musical performance on Sunday, July 26, at 6:30 p.m. in Burnaby's Edmonds area. The show is part of EPIC's Music in the Park series, and the performers are Alastair McMurray, ReidsME and January’s Answer with Emma Toth. The weather forecast for Sunday is cloudy with a 60 per cent chance of showers. Check EPIC's website, at www.epiccommunity.ca, after 3 p.m. on Sunday to see if the show has been cancelled. If it's still on, you may want to bring an umbrella with your lawn chair, just in case.
  4. Take the wee ones to the teddy bears' picnic at the Burnaby farmers’ market on Saturday, July 25. The market runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the city hall parking lot at 4949 Canada Way. Story time for the children is at noon, and there will be a teddy bear parade. Parents, meanwhile, can shop for produce, herbs, baked goods, artisanal products and more.
  5. Head to the Nikkei Centre for a weekend of Japanese film and food. The centre is hosting a trio of films and an all-you-can-eat barbecue. The first show is a screening of Pale Moon on Friday night at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Twilight Sasara Saya is on at 2 p.m., followed by the garden barbecue from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The final film on Saturday is Snow on the Blades. A single bill is $10, while a film and the barbecue cost $25. A double bill and the barbecue cost $30. If you just want to attend the barbecue, it's $20. There are discounts for members. The centre is at 6688 Southoaks Cres. Info and tickets: 604-777-7000.

Correction: In the original version of this column, we listed the wrong acts for EPIC’s Music in the Park series. The performers for the July 26 show were Alastair McMurray, ReidsME and January’s Answer with Emma Toth. The artists we listed were actually for the upcoming Aug. 30 show. They were Malaya Cooks, Vancouver Ocarina Family and Michelle Kwan. Apologies for the error.
