1 Head down to the Hastings Veterinary Hospital for the fourth annual pet health week seminar on Saturday, Oct. 4. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 4585 Albert St. Attendees can learn about pet health care, behaviour, skin infections, allergies and preventative medicine. 2 Bring your pet to a special blessing at All Saints Anglican Church on Saturday, Oct. 4, on the day commemorating St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
All pet owners are welcome, and refreshments will be served.
The blessing starts at 2 p.m., and the church is at 7405 Royal Oak Ave., just a few blocks south of the Royal Oak SkyTrain station.
3 Roll up your sleeves and help tidy the Edmonds neighbourhood this Saturday Oct. 4, when EPIC, the Edmonds residents’ association, leads a local cleanup.
Meet at Gordon Presbyterian Church, 7457 Edmonds St., at 9:45 a.m. for registration.
The cleanup runs from 10 a.m. till noon, and there is a barbecue afterwards for participants. Email [email protected] for more details.
4 Check out the Japanese farmers’ market on Saturday, Oct. 4 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre.
There will be Japanese vegetables (grown in the Fraser Valley) on sale, including gobo (burdock root), kabocha (Japanese pumpkin), daikon (a type of radish) and napa cabbage.
Proceeds from the market go towards the Nikkei Centre. The centre is at 6688 Southoaks Cres., and admission is free.
5 Celebrate Diwali on Saturday, Oct. 4 from 6:30 p.m. to midnight at the Royal Palace Banquet Hall, at 7845 Edmonds St.
The Indo Caribbean Canadian Cultural Society is hosting the event, and tickets are $20 (or $10 for children six to 12, while kids five and under get in for free). Call 604-644-3751 for tickets or more information.
6 Join the party at BCIT’s Burnaby campus as the institute celebrates its 50th anniversary on Saturday, Oct. 4, from noon to 4 p.m.
