A pair of Grade 12 students from North Vancouver have been awarded scholarships of up to $40,000.

Carson Graham Secondary student Bethanea Chou and Seycove Secondary student Claire Swanson have received Beedie Luminaries scholarships, along with 128 other students across the country, it was announced recently.

West Vancouver resident, real estate developer and philanthropist Ryan Beedie started the Beedie Luminaries foundation in 2018, with the goal of using the $50-million fund to help remove barriers for students facing financial challenges.

For many of the student recipients, the scholarship means the difference between being able to attend post-secondary or not, according to a press release from the foundation.

The scholarships are worth $10,000 per year for those students in a four-year undergraduate degree program and $7,500 per year for students in a two-year college or trade-school program.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Beedie Luminaries foundation decided to increase the total number of scholarships this year to a total of 128, according to the release.
