It’s a brand new year in Burnaby, and there are many ways to ring it in on a local level. We’re continuing with our popular feature – our staff’s Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend.

Here’s our Top 5 list for Jan. 10 to 12.

1 Get learning about Japanese history with a new exhibit, Ukiyoe Spectacular: Japanese Woodblock Prints from the 1800s at the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre.

The exhibit opens this Saturday and runs until March 23.

An opening celebration is being held at the Nikkei Centre on Saturday with a talk by curator Shinichi Inagaki from 2 to 3 p.m., and a reception from 3 to 5 p.m. The centre is co-hosting the exhibit of more than 100 woodblocks with the West Vancouver Museum.

The centre is located at 6688 Southoaks Cres.

2 Get playing Shogi at the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre after you check out the new exhibit this Saturday. The centre is hosting the Vancouver Shogi Club’s debut event from 1 to 5 p.m. Shogi, or Japanese chess, is a two-person strategy game. All ages are welcome. The cost to attend, which covers the room rental, is $5. For more information, go to shogivancouver.wordpress.com.

3 Get walking while exploring the Burnaby Art Gallery’s latest exhibit, Volumes: Works in Paper.

The gallery is hosting two walking tours this Saturday – a Mandarin language tour from noon to 1 p.m., and a Korean language tour from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. The gallery is at 6344 Deer Lake Ave. For more information, go to www.burnabyartgallery.ca or call 604-297-4422.
