What's happening in Burnaby this weekend?

Our top 5 things to do this weekend

Help 50,000 chum swim to freedom in Eagle Creek at the annual salmon release Saturday morning. The Eagle Creek Streamkeepers and Fisheries and Oceans Canada will release the fish at Charles Rummel Park (3325 Piper Ave.) starting at 10 a.m. until all the fish have been let go. The event will be educational and fun for all ages.  Parking at Charles Rummel Park is limited, but there are overflow spots available on Mark Crescent and Kraft Place.

Celebrate spring with a tribute to Japanese culture at the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre (6688 Southoaks Cres.) Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Enjoy the beauty and elegance of the Japanese tea ceremony with sittings at 12, 1 and 3 p.m, and watch the Japanese drum performance, iaido demonstration with a Japanese sword, and listen to traditional music and singing at different performances through the day.  Admission is $2, or $5 for families and free for members and kids under five. Some events are an additional charge. For more info, visit centre.nikkeiplace.org/events/celebrate-spring-2018.

Pick up tickets to the Collected, Traces and Still Here at Shadbolt (6450 Deer Lake Ave.) Saturday night at 8 p.m. The Co. ERASGA’s performance involves a transcultural dance that honours ancient ancestral heritage, using an indigenous Filipino fabric called “Malong,” and ancient hand gestures “Mudras.” Tickets are $36 for regular admission, $25 for Dance Centre/CADA members, $15 for students with valid ID. Call 604-205-3000 or visit tickets.shadboltcentre.com.

Sunday is Earth Day! Join the Burnaby Lake Park Association for Weedbusters 2018 and help remove invasive species from the parks. There will be gloves, tools and snacks available. Dress for the weather and be prepared to dig in. Meet at the Glencarin Trail entrance (Kensington Avene near the Trans-Canada Highway), ages eight and up. Contact Ann at [email protected] for more.

Drop in at Burnaby Art Gallery (6344 Deer Lake Ave.) for In the BAG Family Sundays. Get your mind humming with a gallery tour and family-friendly art projects. The theme this weekend is Comical Collages, and it runs from 1 to 4 p.m. It’s free to drop in, and all ages are welcome.
