Most of B.C. Liberal MPs commented on the cabinet’s approval of the Kinder Morgan pipeline when the decision came down on Nov. 29, except for one major player.
Terry Beech, whose Burnaby North-Seymour riding straddles both sides of the Burrard Inlet, declined media requests until Dec. 12, nearly two weeks after the announcement was made.
The young MP wanted to “reserve comment” until he had time to read over the federal government’s decision and meet with his constituents, which he did on Dec. 3 during an open house. (Beech did grant an exclusive interview to the Vancouver Sun before speaking to local media.)
This didn’t bode well with the NOW and other publications – like the North Shore News – who wanted to know where he stood on the matter.
In August, Beech made a strong case to the ministerial panel that his constituents opposed the project.
In the end, the MP stood by the prime minister’s decision and rejected claims that he should cross the floor or run as an independent.
“I’ve actually been amazed how many people have asked me that,” he said at the time.
