HOME IDEAS: Floral arrangements to brighten up the new year

One of the first things I do after the holiday season is to head to my local floral supplier and purchase fresh flowers to brighten up the house.

After the holiday decorations are taken down, the home can feel quite bare and empty. Fresh flowers are a great way to add some colour and texture to your indoor surroundings. They also add a positive vibe to the household during the rainy and snowy months ahead.

Here is a simple and beautiful flower arrangement that is perfect for a kitchen area, bathroom or as a centrepiece for your next dinner party. It is also great for a hostess gift.

Materials

  • Small, round, clear vase
  • Bear grass (available at most florists and grocery store floral departments)
  • Phalaenopsis orchid
  • Sharp scissors
  • Elastic band

Begin by cleaning your vase and setting it aside.

Cut the ends of a small, two-centimetre-diameter bunch of bear grass with the scissors. Tie an elastic band on the end tightly to secure all the pieces together.

Curl the bear grass around your hand and place inside the round vase. Be sure to have the elastic end hidden within the middle of the vase. You should only see the bear grass pieces surrounding the whole inside of the vase.

Fill the vase with room temperature water.

Cut your orchid pieces leaving a two- to three-cm base on each flower stem.

Insert the orchids into the top of the vase in the water.
