Can you hear the drums calling? Burnaby residents are invited to come out and celebrate at the annual Africa Ekassa Cultural Festival.

"It's upbeat, there's always something that's going to be happening. People are going to see a lot of different kinds of African clothing and dresses, people are going to be dancing," said Osakue Ukponrefe, one of the event organizers.

The festival features approximately 10 musical performances, from traditional African drumming to contemporary hip hop and Afro beats.

There will also be African dancing and cuisine, including jollof rice, meat pies, akara (a kind of fried beans), as well as some typical Canadian fare.

There will be a play area for kids, complete with bouncy castle, and a soccer match to watch.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 10, from noon to 8 p.m., at Swangard Stadium, and admission is free. This year marks the fourth for the annual celebration.

The festival is hosted by the Edo Friends of B.C. Association, a non-profit group that helps new immigrants in the Vancouver area. The association was founded by immigrants from the Edo area of southern Nigeria. For more information, go to edofriends. ca/wordpress.
