The Burnaby Writers' Society is taking a peek into Vancouver history at its next Spoken Ink event.

This month's featured author is Daryl Stennett, author of Behind the Steam, a history of Gastown's steam clock.

He'll be reading from his work at the writers' group's next gathering, Tuesday, April 17 at La Fontana Caffe.

Stennett has spent about 40 years in a variety of studies and careers, including economics, business administration, public speaking, conflict resolution, arbitration and technical communications.

He also writes, consults and renovates houses with his wife, Leagh Tomlyn.

In Behind the Steam, he has analyzed private and public records and memories to tell how the steam clock came to be.

It's his first commercial book and the first of a planned series of behind-the-scenes stories of B.C. curiosities.

Check out his work at the next Spoken Ink gathering, which will also include an open mike session.

Open mike sign-up is at 7:30 p.m., with the reading starting at 8 p.m.

La Fontana Caffe is at 101-3701 Hastings St. in North Burnaby.
