Boogie with The BobCats

The excitement of Easter is over but there is still plenty to do in Burnaby, from learning about Buddhism to dancing the night away. We're continuing with our popular feature - our staff's Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend.

The excitement of Easter is over but there is still plenty to do in Burnaby, from learning about Buddhism to dancing the night away.

We're continuing with our popular feature - our staff's Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend. Here's our Top 5 list for April 5 to 7.

1 Get dancing to the classic tunes of The BobCats, playing the Admiral Pub and Grill at 4125 Hastings St. this Friday and Saturday night at 8 p.m. The band plays music from '50s rock & roll to '60s pop music to '70s classic tunes, according to The BobCats website. For more information, go to www.bobcatsband.com.

2 Get learning at a free Nichiren Buddhist seminar, The Power to Change Comes from Within. The Soka Gakkai International Association of Canada is presenting this introduction to Nichiren Buddhism and sharing practical insight into applying Buddhist philosophy to everyday life. The seminar takes place on Saturday from 4 to 5: 30 p.m. at the Tommy Douglas Library, 7311 Kingsway. For more information, go to www. sgicanada.org.

3 Get cultured at the Rite of Spring exhibit at the Deer Lake Art Gallery, which goes on display starting on Friday. The exhibit features media from drawings to paintings to installations, and "is the intersection between Stravinsky's ballet and the domestic ritual of spring cleaning," according to the Burnaby Arts Council. For more information, call the council at 604-297-7322 or go to the council's Facebook page. The gallery is open from noon until 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.

4 Get buying exotic plants at the one-day carnivorous plant sale at 7055 Wilma St. The plants range in price from $10 to $75, in four-inch to gallon pots. There are also garden perennials for sale from the 1.5-acre garden. The owners are opening their collection of oddities and rare hardy exotics, including their private collection of carnivorous pitcher plants.

5 Get preparing those garden beds and plan your growing season. Now that the temperature is climbing, it's time to think about flowers and food crops for the warmer months. GardenWorks is hosting free berry-growing seminars this weekend. On Saturday, there is everything you need to know to grow blueberries at 11 a.m., and everything you need to know to grow berries on your balcony at 1 p.m. On Sunday, there is everything you need to know to grow strawberries at 11: 30 a.m. and everything you need to know about "new" berries - honey-berry, goji berry and more - at 2 p.m. Vancouver landscape architect Senga Lindsay, author of Edible Landscaping, will be at the Burnaby GardenWorks at 6250 Lougheed Hwy. for a free seminar and book signing both days at 3 p.m. For more information, go to www.gardenworks.ca.

6 Get cheering as the B.C. major midget league champion Northwest Giants host Alberta champions, the Red Deer Chiefs, in the regional hockey play-downs for the upcoming Telus Cup in Sault Ste. Marie. The Giants will take on the Chiefs in a best-of-three series at the Burnaby Winter Club April 5 to 7. The series opens on Friday at 7: 30 p.m., with Game 2 scheduled for Saturday at 7: 45 p.m. If necessary, a tiebreaker will be played Sunday at 1 p.m.
