It's a Canada-wide celebration of culture, and Burnaby is joining in.
Culture Days events are planned around the city for the weekend of Sept. 27, 28 and 29.
Among the activities happening over the weekend:
* Taiken - Japanese Canadians since 1877: The Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre hosts this exhibition documenting the history of Japanese Canadians. Listen to the voices of many generations tell their story. It's on for Culture Days on Friday, Sept. 27 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, Sept. 29 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 6688 Southoaks Cres.
* A Call for Justice: In honour of the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Japanese Canadian redress agreement with the government of Canada in 1988, the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre marks the struggle to achieve and apology and recognition for the treatment of Japanese Canadians from 1942 to 1949. The exhibit examines the 10-year fight using photographs, artifacts, poetry, personal statements, art and video. It's open for Culture Days on Friday, Sept. 27 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, Sept. 29 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 6688 Southoaks Cres.
* Beautiful, Brooks, Birds and Beasts: The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts is partnering with Burnaby Arts Council and the Burnaby Artists Guild to host the Beautiful, Brooks, Birds and Beasts exhibition. The opening reception is Friday, Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. at the Shadbolt Centre, 6450 Deer Lake Ave.
* Artist's Talk: The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts hosts an artist's talk with Beth Cavener-Stichter, looking at how the sculptor first began seeing the world through the eyes of an artist and scientist, using the animal figure to describe the tangled web of human emotions and relationships. It's on Friday, Sept. 27 at 6 p.m.
* Art on the Spot: A free Art on the Spot event at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts is on Saturday, Sept. 28. It features cultural performances and art activities for the family. It runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 6450 Deer Lake Ave.
* Nikkei Fall Harvest Fair: The Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre hosts its annual fair on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with programs, entertainment, activities, crafts, exhibits, Japanese food and more. A Japanese farmers' market runs 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Nikkei Centre is at 6688 Southoaks Cres. in Burnaby.
* Waterways - A Celebration: Burnaby Village Museum hosts a celebration of the cultural, environmental and historic value of rivers. Learn how Burnaby's streams are connected to larger waterways and lakes in the region. It's on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday, Sept. 29 from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Burnaby Village Museum is at 6501 Deer Lake Ave.
* Worldwide Bird Art Installation: The Burnaby Arts Council, at 6584 Deer Lake Ave., is hosting the Worldwide Bird Art Installation for the second year. Artists are invited to create a bird and bring it to the gallery on Sunday, Sept. 29. The gallery has already received birds from around the glove. Birds will be installed in the trees in the backyard, and the installation will be documented. There will also be mural painting in celebration of Rivers Day. The fun runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 29.
