Burnaby choir in the choral spotlight

The Phoenix Chamber choir took audiences on a musical pilgrimage to open its 2011/12 season on the weekend. The national-award-winning choir, based in Burnaby, opened its season with Path of the Pilgrim on Nov. 5 and 6.

The Phoenix Chamber choir took audiences on a musical pilgrimage to open its 2011/12 season on the weekend.

The national-award-winning choir, based in Burnaby, opened its season with Path of the Pilgrim on Nov. 5 and 6.

The concert waxs at Shaughnessy Heights United Church in Vancouver on Saturday and at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Surrey on Sunday.

The concert took its audience on a musical journey through a range of music, including music from 14th-century manuscripts and two medieval pilgrim prayers evocatively set by contemporary British composer Jonathan Dove. Other offerings included The Long Road, by the young Latvian superstar Eriks Esenvalds, plus compositions by Vytautas Miskinis, Knut Nystedt, Brian A. Schmidt and James Whitbourn, along with the world premire of Miles Ramsay's arrangement of Walk in Jerusalem.

The choir is directed by Burnaby's Ramona Luengen.

Up next for the choir is A Phoenix Christmas, Dec. 17 at New West Christian Reformed Church in Burnaby, and Dec. 18 at Shaughnessy Heights.
