Burnaby community mosaic unveiled

An art project that brought the community together was unveiled on the weekend at the Burnaby Artists Guild's fall show.

The guild held its fall show and sale over the weekend at Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, with work by featured artist Hazel King and members of the guild.

The event also featured the Friday night unveiling of the 2011 Edmonds community mosaic project, which was spearheaded by the Burnaby Artists Guild.

At the end of September, as part of Culture Days festivities, community members of all ages were invited to take part by painting one of 150 five-by-seven-inch canvases that were then combined to form a four-by-eight-foot mural. In total, 112 people took part in creating a canvas for the mosaic.

None of the participating artists knew while they were painting what the overall picture would be, but they were asked to artistically express their knowledge of and feelings about Burnaby.

"We are so grateful for the partnerships with Edmonds Community Centre, Opus Art Supplies, Save On Foods and Rona Building Supplies," said artist Roxsane Tiernan. "We had people from two years old to senior seniors, from many nationalities and ways of life, and the end product talks about Burnaby, what a great place it is and how much we appreciate living and working or visiting here."
