A Burnaby resident is on her way to the Philippines to work on her first professionally funded dance film.
Tin Gamboa, armed with a B.C. Arts Council grant and money she is fundraising herself, is spearheading The MariaClara Project, which is exploring the idea of what it means to be a Filipino woman. A press release notes that, as a Filipina artist herself, Gamboa is working to address the implications of gentility and softness associated with womanly ideals in the Philippines – while she, as part of a younger generation, sees the benefits of strength.
“She seeks to reconcile these two opposing images and create a dialogue around a new type of feminine identity for the Filipino woman,” the release notes.
She plans to wok with 25 other Filipino women to address the question of identity, creating movement that expresses their celebration of being Filipina.
