Burnaby searching for mural enthusiasts

It was 1978 and excited Burnaby residents and students gathered at Wesburn Community Centre ready to paint a mural with a conceptualized design weaving all the similarities of the proposals together.

And that's all the city knows about the Wesburn mural, according to Louise Rusch, Burnaby's recreation programs coordinator for the southwest area.

On Aug. 7, the Wesburn family picnic in the park will celebrate summer with activity stations, splashing in the wading pool, roasting hot dogs and memorializing the community mural that will get replaced next year.

"What we're looking to do at the picnic is we'll have some art activities through community arts to memorialize the mural," Rusch said. "Through another community process, starting next spring, we will create another image for the outside of the building and then that will be installed - weather permitting - hopefully next July."

Those who want to keep a physical memory of the mural can come to the picnic and have their photo taken with it.

"The exterior of the building needs to be painted and it requires minor repairs," she said as to why the 35-year-old mural is getting replaced. "It's part of an ongoing maintenance requirement for the building."

Rusch said the city is also looking for anyone who was involved in creating the original mural to contact the centre.

"It would be wonderful if we could find out the exact person who pulled all the ideas together and conceptualized the mural," she added. "It might not be possible. I get the sense it's hard to give that design credit just to one person."

The picnic will run rain or shine at Wesburn Park, at the corner of Moscrop and Patterson. Call 604-297-4572 or email [email protected] for more information.
